What!!! Secret Men’s Business

What!!!  Secret Men’s Business

If you are like me then every once in a while you feel like there must be something more to life than this. Well at least I know that I do and also know that the men in my “Men’s Group” do too. Now there’s a secret for you. I’m a man who goes weekly to a man’s group.

Have you ever had this problem? One of the recurring themes in my life is that I constantly confronted and having to deal with the harsh and judgements I have made about my fellow men and women.

Like when I was leading Horse Riding Tours and a woman started to cry about losing her horse. I thought “Get a life its only a horse” – of course I didn’t say that to her.

Only a few months later I lost my horse Jacko in an horrible accident. Jacko and I had been “mates” mustering and touring for 19 years and he had saved me from many a sticky situation with “man eating cows and bullocks.”

I cried for a week and had to humble pie.

So here I find myself eating humble pie again, this time it is a different situation and yet the humble pie tastes just the same, it tastes bloody awful.

I always thought that men who go to men’s groups must be weak. They must me really sick in the head and definitely not “My kind of man.” Well if so I have joined them lock stock and barrel.

What I have found is a group of men where I am accepted for who I am. A group of men who support me to be great and they are also there with me when my life is not working too.

The will listen to me like only a warrior of a man can and then challenge me on my BS and call me into action.

The truth is that I am full of bullshit at times and what I don’t need is some bully to rub my face. NO – what I need is the strong support of the men in my life to be able to stand up and have me be responsible for the crap that comes out of my mouth.

So here is the bottom line for me and I hope you to find some inspiration and direction from what I have found at my Men’s Group.

Our men’s group offers these things in truck loads and if you are a man and you want some of this then here is what you can have if you are willing to cast aside your prejudices and your judgements and turn up.

  • Accountability
  • Authenticity
  • Compassion
  • Generosity
  • Integrity
  • Multicultural Awareness
  • Respect
  • Initiation – Learning the value of challenge and the power of support.
  • Men Helping Men – Breaking the competitive cycle, learning to resolve conflict, challenging old habits, finding acceptance.
  • Connection To Feelings – Emotional literacy is recognised by psychologists as a key factor in successfully dealing with many of life’s most complex issues.

Our Men’s Group is part of a World Wide Group of Men and you can find more info at www.MKPA.Org

Learning To Learn Should Be Compulsory For All Parents, Teachers and Students

Dr Stephanie BurnsLearning To Learn Should Be Compulsory For All Parents, Teachers and Students

Dr Stephanie Burns - Creator and Presenter of "Learning to Learn"

A LETTER FROM DR STEPHANIE BURNS – Amazing Author and masterful trainier to over 40,000 Australians

Adults really do need to “Learn to Learn”?

Many adults laugh at the concept of “learning to learn” and think it’s just a waste of time – after all, you’ve made it through school… you’ve achieved certain levels of success… you can get by… so you can obviously learn… RIGHT? NO Its WRONG.
Want proof? Here are the facts. In an average class of 100 employed, university educated adults:

- The average reading speed will be 200 words per minute. This is very slow. (what’s your’s?)
- The average score on a general comprehension test taken immediately after reading the relevant material will be 70 percent.
- The notes they take, if any at all, will serve no real purpose, meaning they will never look at them after the class.
- There will be no other strategy than reading one word at a time for locating information in text.
- 40 percent consider themselves to be poor spellers.
- 70 percent consider themselves to have bad memories.
- 90 percent believe they are too uncoordinated to learn to juggle.

While learning might be a skill, school does very little to teach us about using our mental and physical attributes for the purpose of effective learning.

As a result, most people go through life achieving far below their potential simply because they have
never learned to learn. In fact, most of us are still learning at the level of a teenager, despite our many years of experience.

Think about what that’s costing you: How much time are you wasting because you read slowly? Or because you cannot remember what you read? Or because your notes never get used?

I think you’ll find if you tally this up to a dollar figure it would work out to thousands of dollars over a lifetime.

The truth is you’ve never been taught to learn! And so you just continue on with the “learning habits” you had when you were a teenager.

I should know. After presenting seminars to tens of thousands of different adults, I have found our childhood habits simply repeat themselves when we get back in the classroom…

- We rock back in our chairs
- We come to class late
- We doodle on our papers
- We won’t ask questions when we are confused
- We fear doing anything that might make us look silly

The bottom line is your skill as a learner is not going to improve until you do something to change the beliefs, habits and strategies that were handed over to you decades ago.

And if you want to clear your desk and wipe away that outdated approach, regaining your natural ability to remember information (so you can actually absorb and use what you learn and get an unfair advantage) then why not hop along to LEARNING TO LEARN and find out what the fuss is all about.

All for now,

Dr. Stephanie Burns

Keyboard Shortcuts Are Worth Squillions

Alison Muir 250x300Keyboard Shortcuts Are Worth Squillions

You Are Never To Old To Learn New Tricks. Alison Muir 80 and has just learned all these shortcuts. She is currently assisting her husband, Jim Muir who is 90 to write his first book. This will be her fourth.

Here is my a list of keyboard shortcuts that will save you heaps of time this year. Print this list and give a copy to everyone in your office and then teach them all in a training session and you will become an instant celebrity.

Ctrl + Z                                  Undo The Last Action

Will undo the last action you took in a web browser, form, word processor, spreadsheet or virtually any other Windows application.

Windows + F                         Files Find on Your Computer

This combination of the Windows logo key and the F key at the same time launches the Windows Search utility.

Windows +E                          Windows Explorer

This allows you to open up the Windows Explorer feature in Windows to explore your hard drives memory sticks, CD and DVD drives.

Ctrl + Mouse Wheel              Zoom IN or Zoom OUT

Just hold the Ctrl key down and roll your mouse wheel up and down to adjust the zoom.

Windows + D                         Give Me The Desk Top NOW

Will minimize all open windows on your computer to expose your desktop. Hit the keys again and your open windows spring back to life and allow you to continue working.

Shift + F3                               Change The Case from Title to BLOCK

Simply highlight the text in your word processor and hit to cycle between all caps, lowercase and title case.

Alt + Tab                               Toggle Between All The Open Programs

Will take you to the last program you had open. Especially handy when you are copying and pasting between programs.

Here are the basics just in case you missed out on them

Ctrl + C                                  copy the highlighted text or picture

Ctrl + V                                  Paste the highlighted text or picture

Ctrl + X                                  Cut the highlighted text or picture

F12                                         Save As when using Microsoft Word & Excel.

Here is my confession. Alison Muir is my MUM and I reckon if she can do the short cuts, You Can Too.

I am normally a very peaceful, calm and polite gentleman and yet there have been times when I have turned into a screaming maniac when confronted with the frustrations of teaching my wife, my friends and my staff more efficient computer techniques.

In fact my wife reminds me that I am not polite or calm most of the time, I just say that with the poetic license that comes with a BLOG.

Have you ever experienced the problem of teaching someone you care about a new and faster way to do something and then be told they are not going to do it because “Well that’s the way I’ve always done it and it works for me.”

So let’s do the maths on it so you can see what I can see. This is why time and money just pores down the drain every day and what gets me so upset.

Lets imagine you can save just 3 (THREE) seconds every time you open or close a program.

 50 times a day             =          150                  Seconds

5 days per week          =          750                  Seconds

40 weeks per year       =          2820                Seconds

$35 per Hour               =          $292                 Per Year

10 Staff                       =          $2,920                Per Year

100 staff                      =          $29,000            Per year

Now I know I am a real pain in the backside about this an it probably all comes from 1983. That’s when I bought an Apple IIe Computer for $2,750. It didn’t have a mouse, they weren’t even invented then so I learned to do my computing without a mouse. No Colour, no Graphics and 56k of floppy disk storage.

So you can see I am really OLD and I would really like to tell you that my grey hair is a sign of age and experience.

Go to Teach Once Learn Twice. These shortcuts will make a difference.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Print This Part or Copy and Paste into Word and then Print

Connect Your Passion to Your Work and Your Life

Get Your Groove Back is a great book written by one of my coaching students, Jasbinder Singh. She has a great story that has taken her to the top of her field in New Zealand. As an executive coach of Indian heritage she is a powerful and heartfelt reminder of the power of one womans struggle and determination to be the best she can be.

Well done Jas and I loved your book, especially the chapter on Mining for Gold and the “stages in life exercise” on page 99 where I reminded myself of all the good and great thing I have done rather than those things I am not doing now.

One of my proudest memories I have decided to bring back to life and tell more people about is written in my latest blog.

Jasbinder Singh launched her book and this video is well worth the 3.5 mins

You Know You Are A Leader When They Say… “I Wish You Were My Dad”

37 LOOK AT ME 150x150You Know You Are A Leader When They Say... “I Wish You Were My Dad”“I Wish You Were My Dad”

Back in 1985 when the great Bob Hawke was our Prime Minister my life was very different to the air conditioned comfort I now work in.

My comfortable office chair was in fact a stock saddle my Dad gave me when I was 14 and my office was the D’Entrecasteau and Shannon National Park in South West Western Australia. My home for much of the year was a mustering hut and my closest companion Jacko my horse and Don my kelpie dog.29 Andy Jim with Cattle 1980 150x150You Know You Are A Leader When They Say... “I Wish You Were My Dad”

Now if my 65 year old saddle could talk it would tell you tales of fantastic adventures brave and true. The wild horses we rode and the amazing times we had together chasing and being chased by man eating cows and bullocks. The special times that I remember are more the heartfelt ones where I was able to be a powerful and positive contribution to the life and minds of the hundreds of young teenagers that PM Bob Hawke and his Labor policy’s sent my way.

Youth unemployment was at an awful 23% in most areas and PM Bob Hawke and his good men decided that Jeff Muir could do something about helping these kids with something to do. We built fences and yards, we went riding, fishing, camping and generally had a really great time. On one hand I was well paid for the time and effort that my business partner Tom Muir and I put in to these kids. On the other hand we both thought it was a waste of money but who cares, the money is coming our way.

Mustering Hut Shannon National Park 150x150You Know You Are A Leader When They Say... “I Wish You Were My Dad”At the start of this invasion of customers and money my philosophy and ethics were challenged in a big way. What a massive waste of money. Bob Hawke and our Federal Government paying for a bunch of “dole bludging kids” to go horse riding for a week when the general public had to pay over $660 for the same privilege.

Well how wrong could I be.

One day I was sitting in my trusty old stock saddle astride Jacko and heading back to camp on the last day of a long trip. Riding along with 14 other kids and alongside me was a young girl, sad and very depressed. She had been hanging around me all day and I asked “What’s the matter?”

The response will be with me forever.

Big Black Horse 150x150You Know You Are A Leader When They Say... “I Wish You Were My Dad”This wonderful young teenager from a single parent home in Albany said to me that she wished I was her Dad. She started to cry and tell me that for the first time she could remember she was able to be herself, to laugh and play and have fun with other the kids. At the age of 16 she had been the full time carer of her mother and younger brothers for 4 years. On this trip she got to sleep in a bed all by herself for a whole 6 days, she had three full meals every day and got to go horse riding as well. It was like paradise.

To this day I am still challenged by my shallow judgements and my prejudices. Until then I could only see Bob Hawke’s policies in the light of a short term dollar cost benefit. My world view got tipped right upside down that day and I’m really glad it did.

I am reminded now of the story of the beach covered in starfish and a lone woman throwing them one at a time back in the water.  What are you doing, was her friends response when she saw what a futile effort it was to be throwing the starfish into the water one at a time when there were hundreds of thousands that couldn’t be saved.

“This one cares!” as she threw the next on in.

Well this one certainly cared because she bumped into me in Perth about three years later. She was working in a restaurant in Myers and when she saw me she was just so excited and radiant and beautiful. The powerful lesson for me was very simple and yet memorable and incredibly powerful.Drovers Life Has Pleasures That The Towns Folk Never Know 150x150You Know You Are A Leader When They Say... “I Wish You Were My Dad”

As a teacher and a leader in the world today you and I might never know the impact we have on the minds of the people we touch. I remember “I Wish You Were My Dad” being said to me a few more times as well. I feel blessed that over the 16 years I guided people through the wilderness on horseback that I was able to give the gift of leadership with love.

Google Features “Bucky Balls” So Who Is “Bucky”

Google Bucky BallGoogle Features Bucky Balls So Who Is Bucky

    Google Bucky Ball

Bucky Balls are fascinating and so too is the man they have been named after. A quick Wikipedia search will reveal a small part of “Buckminster Fuller’s” incredible life. Some people measure his contribution to the world as one of the most significant minds of the 20th century.

I certainly agree that he had a tremendous impact on the world and through his work my own life has been impacted as well. “Bucky” as he is affectionately known, was the thought leader behind a personal development program called “Money and You.”  The 3 1/2 day program that teaches his work is still running today in Australia, USA, China and Malaysia.

Money and You is one of the few business and personal development courses that I recommend to any business owner or aspiring entrepreneur. The program teaches the universal principles that we missed out on in school. They are called “generalised principles” because they are “true in all cases.” Bucky dedicated his life to the study and teaching of these principles and one of his students, Marshal Thurber they created the “Money and You” program.

    Why Teach Generalised Principles

Buckyball 150x150Google Features Bucky Balls So Who Is Bucky
    Buckyball

The study of “generalise principles” give you stability and control in life and business because no matter what the current environmental conditions, the principles remain the same. The most obvious example of a generalised principle is gravity. It always works, every time and without fail. In fact we take gravity for granted so much that we don’t even think about it.

Avoid Failure By Using These Generalised Principles

Leverage – A force compounded by means of a lever rotating around a pivot. Using $10,000 to borrow $100,000 is a simple example of leverage.

Lag – delay, to fail to keep up or to fall behind. In marketing and promoting a seminar or training event the lag between promoting and the event date is 6 weeks. Ignore this one and you will be pushing your luck to get sufficient numbers to attend.

Imagine playing a learning game about “leverage” with over 60 people for a few hours. The game is noisy, confusing, has teams and then none and you are all seeking the answer to the puzzle. The game is debriefed by a man who has made a multimillion dollar fortune and says he learned the lessons in this game.

The study of “generalise principles” significantly impacts lives. Leaders and teachers like myself and others are constantly learning new distinctions an applying them to our businesses and teaching the lessons to our clients to make the whole world a better place for us all.

Finally, Bucky was an extraordinary man of last century. A courageous man dedicated his life to leaving the world a much better place that he found it. Thank you to Google for a gift to us all with your feature of the Bucky Balls today.
